From CityU’s Alumni Director

“I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.”
~ John Cage, American composer, philosopher, and writer

In this issue of Velocity you’ll receive pointers from both business and mental health experts when faced with the inevitable new ideas and changes life sends our way. While some of us embrace change and the exciting opportunities it presents, many of us find it difficult to adjust to new situations or environments. Sometimes our ability to adapt just depends on the specific day or type of circumstance, doesn’t it?

It’s interesting that sometimes the most exciting times of change can also cause the most stress.  Having just spent a month with one child graduating from college, the other from high school, a brother getting married, and a family fundraiser – and having to travel over 3,700 miles in order to attend the life-changing events – I completely understand!

The fact remains that our lives will be inevitably filled with minor variations as well as major transformations. The question is, how well will you respond?

All the best,

Eileen Ryan-Rojas
Director of Alumni and Development
