From CityU’s Alumni Director

How resourceful are you?

As the media keeps reminding us, there is a big recession looming. That means I will need to adjust my approach to many things in my life. The idea that “less is more” will not only pertain to my consumer spending, for example, but also the way I approach my job, especially if I am going to be more effective at what I do.

In these questionable financial times, to make the best use of my talent, tools, and energy I will need to ask myself the following:

Have I chosen the few key priorities and focused on doing them well rather than doing too many things not-so-well?

Do I know what’s most important to begin with?

Can I pursue the few, more important items with enthusiasm and at least some calculated security?

What are the risks of shifting focus from the other areas that are still important but just not at the top of the list?

As you read about some successful people in this issue of Velocity you can be sure that they tackled these questions and many more. Being a trailblazer will often entail risk and setting aside things that once held value, but if you are convinced the chosen path is the correct one, the risks pail in comparison with the potential results—and lasting rewards.

Blaze those trails.

All the best,

Eileen Ryan-Rojas
Director of Alumni and Development
